In this video I’m still trying to figure out a style of video I want to make. Look how tiny she is!!! This was something I used to do with my old dog. The scent that we decide on here doesn’t matter. If you have something specific to work on like narcotics then by all means, train with that. I’ve found that it’s pretty easy to introduce new smells later. My last dog could be turned onto a new scent with 2-3 reps of making it super easy. For IGP we are going to need her to use her nose in a different way; however, this is an easy way to work the nose every day.

The fundamental skill being shown here is shaping. That’s what I’m trying to say in the video. I think that’s why I like nose work so much, you get to watch the dog teach her self. It’s cool.

All right. So, first let's talk about these scent boxes. So, I 3D print these little scent boxes. I buy the essential oils from King Super, put one drop on a Q-tip, and they either drop in a tea box or scent box. Uh, and if it looks like she's struggling to find them, add a new drop. So, this was the beginning when she was about 8 weeks old. I started with her. Yes. >> What we did is just put a Q-tip with one drop in there and I dropped it in there and I set it on the ground and her natural curiosity attracts her to the box and then we mark and reward every time she goes and gets interested. >> She has no idea that she's getting rewarded for the scent at this moment in time, but she will learn with multiple repetitions and setting it up in different ways. >> Search. >> This part is fun. We get to see the intensity change between nine and 13 weeks >> as she comes out the door. >> And then after that, we're gonna hop back over to 9 weeks. You can see how intense she is at 13. So here she is 9 weeks old. She's coming out. She's looking for stuff. She gets a little confused at times and she'll look to me a lot like what am I supposed to be doing? And so what I do is I just kind of give her a hand gesture like I pretend to throw something towards the direction. >> And you'll see she found the scent box. And since she doesn't know what she's doing yet, I put the reward directly on the scent box. And she does end up finding all six scent boxes, but we end up cutting this one a little short because uh >> she gets confused a lot in the beginning. This was this is real early on in her training. >> Search. At 11 weeks, we introduces indication. >> You'll notice she's got more intensity. She understands the game now. She knows what she's doing. >> Heads straight for it. >> And instead of giving her the food and putting on the food box, now I tell her to sit. And when she sits, then I give it to her. It only took uh a couple sessions of this before she started sitting automatically. At least when she does it with me. Um, you'll see in the next section when she turns 13 weeks, she gets a little confused when Casius, my 5-year-old, goes to train her on it. >> Search. >> Uh, she does look right there. She was looking a little confused. And what I did is I just, uh, I just re gave her the search command. >> Search >> indication again. >> All right, follow her, guys. >> So, here's the fun one. What I did this, she's getting real good at this now. And this is the first time she's taking sitting. Grab a piece of meat. >> And toss it to her. >> You'll see Cassas is a little nervous about giving her food. >> And toss it to her. >> Toss it to her. Drop it. You know, we want our We want our dog to >> Okay. And then tell >> compensate for the kids. >> Search. There she goes. Follow her >> because Cassas is ahead of her in the pack mentality. if you want to go off of that. But I want her to listen to Casus >> along with all the other humans in the house. >> All right. >> And so we do some of this work with Cas and her >> sit and toss her. Now >> if it was just me, you see she's she would sit automatically, but because it's Casus, she needs the verbal command. >> Follow her. >> That was a little bit better, wasn't it? Yeah. >> Search. >> Keep an eye on her, Cass. I don't know why she gets hung up on the refrigerator. Um, there must be something over there attracted in her nose. Um, so I end up actually having to guide her out of the fridge a little bit, which is really easy. I just leave the room and then she follows. >> There's nothing in there. >> The military working dogs, if you don't know, those guys kind of lead the dogs around to certain get out of the kitchen. >> It's not really a big deal to help pull her out. >> Let's lead her out of there. I have the bed set up on the wall like that for a trick that we're working on where she jumps on and jumps off to catch stuff in the midair. It's pretty cool. I'll try and video it sometime. >> It's hard to get a camera to show that, right? >> Sit. >> Toss it to her. >> Redo the verbal command and for both her and Casius there. There's one further in here. See if she knows. Search. Create a search. And after she finds the next one, we're going to cut this video off because >> say good girl. Toss her one. >> Cassie just gives her a piece of meat with a big old chunk of bone in it. It takes her like 30 seconds to chew it. So >> that's gonna be the end of this. Thanks for watching.
