Griz Urban Trailing, Hard Pack, and Dirt Pile Tracking

Griz Urban Trailing, Hard Pack, and Dirt Pile Tracking

Urban Search and Rescue Trailing

This is a search and rescue urban training. The trail is about 40 minutes old. I was given a point last seen and a direction of travel, and I knew there was 1 unmarked corner to work through. Along the trail there is a distraction with another dog. The goal of this exercise was to help me learn when Griz is on odor, and when she’s following drifting odor.

The first video is the portrait mode version, which is how the video was taken. The second is the same video cropped in for landscape, to make it a bit better for YouTube.

Hard Pack Tracking

The next video is the same day. I was noticing how she struggles on the hard pack. We would hope that when she loses a track she starts trailing to keep on odor; however, I can also work on improving her tracking skills through hard pack, low odor areas. That’s what we are doing here.

Tracking Over a Dirt Pile

While walking the dogs I saw this dirt pile and wanted to see how Griz would do tracking over it in a straight line. I’m not sure this helps her with anything other than a new experience. It’s kind of cool though, and maybe I’ll do it again and see if there’s improvement.

Griz Tracking up a dirt pile

All righty. I'm going to set up a track here on something different. Uh it's going to be straight line. You can see there's some vegetation here. I'm going to see if she'll track over the top of this hill. And then when we get to the other side, I'm going to go hook a left. And by that green box, I'll set my hat. And that will be where she gets her ball for a reward marker. All righty. Sit. Sit. So, I got her this new collar. This is a first saver. It's required for tracking and competition at IGP. So, we're going to start using this as a way to classically condition her that she should be doing tracking instead of trailing. We'll go ahead and drop this leash. Throw this over the top. Her prong collar can stay there. It's not going to do anything. Now, let's see how she does. Where is he? missed kind of a lot of food. I don't know if she realized that the food was down there. Um, she needed a little encouragement to start heading up the hill, but it was our first time, so could have been better, could have been worse.
