Chill

Once a day I do this with my dogs in some fashion or another. In this video, I’m listening to an audio book in my shed. Sometimes I’ll do this in the house, with the family while watching a movie. Maybe I have company over, and we are hanging out by a fire and my dogs are acting a fool, so I’ll put them in a down and work this chill training. In this video I’m shaping focus as well. That’s not necessary; however, if you are doing chill training with just you and your pups, then you might as well practice.

To work on focus here, I mark eye contact before rewarding. I’m asking for about 10 seconds of sustained eye contact here, but it started with just an instant. Another thing to note is if you had sound in this video, you wouldn’t hear a verbal marker at all. Instead, I mark the eye contact with a raising of my eyebrows. It might be silly but it’s better than a verbal marker because if you use a verbal marker here, you might miss the eye-contact and mark your dog adverting their eyes. With an eyebrow raise, if you mark too late, it brings their eyes back to your face.

Teaching dogs to chill

This is what we call chill training. All right. So, either Jade or I do this pretty much almost every day. So, I have Grizz and Denali hanging out. They're laying down. You'll see Grizz is somewhat in drive for the food at times, but we force her to stay in a chill state. And I basically am listening to an audio book, which is why you don't have any audio from the show and just some background music. By the way, this is sped up 400%. So, this lasts about two the video lasts about 2 minutes, but it took 8 minutes to record. And I do it for longer. I just listen to focus while this goes on. Anyways, um some stuff that I practice here is uh you can't see it, but I'm working on focus and and shaping a focus. So, when I make eye contact, give my eyebrows a little raise as a yes sort of marker and I give them a reward. Other than that, you'll even watch a video and mostly just see that I'm keeping them teaching them how to chill next to each other for a long period of time. That's all this is. Heat. Heat. N.
